Dear AGB Riders and Friends:  Two important updates... - K

1) From OC Dean:  Ken, this seems outrageous and makes me want to cancel my AAA membership and send the money to the rails-to-trails conservancy instead. Can you help get the word out to cyclists in the area and to BikeAthens? Thanks.  --oc

rails to trails conservancy

Dear O C,

[Not O C? Go directly to RTC's AAA petition page.]

Ask AAA to be part of America's transportation future! Sign the petition.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) wants Congress to cut long-standing programs that support trails, biking and walking in order to divert those funds to the highway system. (Read the background.)

These programs have played a major role in the development of more than 19,000 miles of rail-trail across the country, most likely including your favorite local trail. These trails and other walking and bicycling facilities allow individuals across the country to enjoy the outdoors and safely and easily travel without a car for many short trips—while saving money and gas, and getting exercise in the process.

AAA has forgotten that bicyclists and trail lovers drive, support AAA, pay gas taxes and want balanced transportation systems that provide the choice to get around in a variety of ways.

Help us help them remember!

Dear AAA,

I am one of tens of millions of Americans who want safe, convenient places to bicycle and walk. AAA, be a part of America’s transportation future!

Say YES to the federal programs that fund all ways of getting around—including trails, bicycling and walking!

2) Here is updated, more detailed description of Sunday's ride - from Georgia Judson -

Holy Roller
When:  Sunday, September 26, 2010, 9am – 12pm
Where: 800 U.S. Highway 29 N, Athens, GA 30601, Athens Technical College (map)
Description:  Ride leaves at 9:00 a.m. As the name implies, this approx. 40-mile ride offers plenty of churches and hills in rural Madison County and uber-rural Oglethorpe County, plus the occasional heron and bluebird. Ride leaves from the Athens Tech parking lot off of Old Hull Road (large parking lot at south end of campus) and includes large segments of the Gambler route but adds Colbert-Smithon Road and Hargrove Lake Road for some mildly challenging hill work. There are no planned store stops, although a c-store is just off the route in Colbert if needed. Water available at Welcome Avenue Church at around the 25-mile mark. Flat streches at the beginning and end of the ride for optimum warm-up and cool-down. There are multiple shorter and longer options which will be pointed out on the maps at the start of the ride. Will ride if raining unless it's too windy or if the rain is, like, horizontal. Ride maps and cue sheets will be available. Ride leader plans a pace of 14-15 m.p.h.; no one gets dropped. Download a route map from http://www.cyclenittygritty.org/ For more information contact Georgia Judson, 706-461-0195, email: judsong [at] bellsouth.net.
