The nonprofit Oconee County Cycling Organization Inc. has elected its first official board of directors, replacing a provisional board that operated from the organization's inception since October 2009. "The outgoing board did a remarkable job establishing the organization. The future successes of this organization will be a direct result of their efforts," said Brett Haslam, who was elected president. The provisional board was instrumental in securing Oconee County's first Share the Road signs, which have been placed on New High Shoals Road. "While we are pleased that the county has been accommodating" in placing those signs, "there are still a number of busy roads that warrant Share the Road signs," said Tony Glenn, the new secretary. The purpose of the new board is to continue to advocate for all types of cycling and enhance Oconee County's cycling infrastructure. The cycling group's membership "consists of a good cross-section of the county demographic," Haslam said. "These individuals are passionate about the benefits cycling brings to the community and support establishing a cycling culture that will benefit children, mountain bikers, road cyclists and recreational cyclists alike." The board typically meets semimonthly and can be contacted at cycling [at] oconeecycling.org. Membership is open to all individuals interested in supporting and developing a cycling culture in Oconee County. Annual membership costs $25 for an individual and $40 for a family. Current and future initiatives include advocating for Share the Road signs, supporting Rail to Trail initiatives in Oconee County, and upgrading county roads and parks infrastructure to accommodate all types of cycling. The new board consists of Haslam, president; Patrick Beall, vice president; Glenn, secretary; Jimmy Marbut, treasurer; and board members Bethany Goldman, Richard McSpadden, Kathleen Miller, Jim Shanni, Steve Shiver and Adam Traill.wishing you the best of luck |
