Show your support for Georgia House Bill 101- aka the âBetter Bicycling Billâ

So weâve got some important legislation on the table regarding bicycling
laws and safety in Georgia. One is Georgia House Bill 101- aka the âBetter
Bicyclingâ bill- which aims to improve public safety and awareness by
clarifying a host of outdated laws related to bicycling safety,
establishing minimum guidelines for safe bicycle facilities, and
modernizing Georgiaâs code to better accommodate current bicycling
equipment. To see the bill in its entirety, check out this link:

To send a message to your representatives using the League of American
Bicyclistsâ handy dandy pre-drafted (but editable) letter, check out this
link (it just takes a few clicks and fill-in-the-blanks to show your
support):

âThree Foot Safe Passingâ bill needs your support!

Another important piece of legislation needs your support! Georgia House
Bill 180- aka the âThree Foot Safe Passingâ bill is on the line. Sixteen
other states have already adopted similar legislation. When enacted, this
legislation will be called the âTony Serrano Act,â in honor of a Georgia
triathlete killed by a passing vehicle in August of 2004. Urge Georgia
legislators to support safer cycling by sending a message using this sweet
and easy link:

Good news for Oconee cyclists!

Check out this article from the Banner Herald about some of the progress
being made by this new cycling advocacy group- keep your eyes peeled for a
potential Tour dâOconee in May and more âShare the Roadâ signs!

BRP back on Sundays

As you all have been reading, the Bicycle Recycling Program has been
taking a short break after working overtime on the Holiday Bikes for Kids.
However, we are opening back up for business on Sundays only from 2-4:30
at the usual spot at the Chase Street warehouses.

As usual, volunteers need not have any knowledge of bicycle maintenance;
just be willing to get their hands dirty repairing, tuning up, cleaning,
and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring your own repair stands and tools
although it is not necessary that you have these items to participate.

BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local
social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in
the Athens community who are underserved by private and public
transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the
bikes.

On the Horizon

March 22- Georgia Rides to the Capital
During the sixth annual "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, cyclists
will embark on rides to the Capitol in order to raise support for improved
conditions for cycling, including the development of regional systems of
both on-road bicycling facilities and multi-use-trails. The event will
clearly demonstrate the widespread support in our state for better
bicycling laws! For more information, check out the website:
http://www.georgiaridestothecapitol.org/index.php

Also, a few cyclists from Athens plan to drive in for the ride and ride
from the Decatur area to the capitol. Let us know if you want to tag
along. Also, note there are rides from many cities across the metro area
and perhaps one from your hometown too!
