Weekly Announcements 3/1/11 1. Two important TSPLOST events set for this Wednesday March 2 at 5 PM and 7 PM 2. Your action needed on Three Foot Safe Passing Bill today! 3. Daily Co-op members: vote for BikeAthens for charity of the month! 4. BRP back in full swing! 5. On the Horizon *********************************************************** Two important TSPLOST events set for this Wednesday March 2 at 5 PM and 7 PM For those of you interested in seeing more rails, buses, bikes, trails, and sidewalks in Athens there are two important meetings happening this Wednesday evening downtown. Whatâs up for discussion is selection of transportation projects that would be funded by TSPLOST, should voters decide to pass the measure in 2012. While the majority of the money would be spent on roads, it can also be used for options such as buses, sidewalks, bike lanes, trails, and commuter rails. Voters will ultimately be voting on the list that will start to be compiled this week. Although it will still have to be approved by the DOT and go through another round of public hearings, this is a critical opportunity to advocate for the projects that you would like to see funded. Our new mayor will also be in attendance at both events, so itâs a good chance to meet her. Hereâs whatâs going on: 5- 630 PM- Sustainable Transportation Forum/Mixer and informational meeting at the banquet room at downtown Transmetropolitan (145 E. Clayton Street), lead by Russell Edwards 7 - 9 PM - Athens Clarke County Transportation forum at 120 West Dougherty Street- There will be a short presentation by staff at 7 PM, followed by a question and answer session. During the course of the meeting, citizens will be able to submit recommendations for projects they would like to be included. The Daily Groceries Co-op will hold its 18th annual meeting Friday March 4 at Little Kings Shuffle Club, 223 West Hancock Ave, Athens, at 7 PM, and the public is welcome to attend. For those of you who plan on attending, BikeAthens has thrown our name into the hat to be considered for Charity of the Month and we encourage you to show your support by casting a vote for us! *********************************************************** BRP back in full swing! Itâs March, oddly warm and springtime-like, and everyone is good and rested from the Holiday bikes push. That means weekday BRP sessions are back! BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 and Sundays from 2-4:30 at the Chase St. warehouses. Volunteers need not have any knowledge of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you have these items to participate. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes. *********************************************************** On the Horizon March 22- Georgia Rides to the Capital During the sixth annual "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, cyclists will embark on rides to the Capitol in order to raise support for improved conditions for cycling, including the development of regional systems of both on-road bicycling facilities and multi-use-trails. The event will clearly demonstrate the widespread support in our state for better bicycling laws! For more information, check out the website: http://www.georgiaridestothecapitol.org/index.php Also, a few cyclists from Athens plan to drive in for the ride and ride from the Decatur area to the capitol. Let us know if you want to tag along. Also, note there are rides from many cities across the metro area and perhaps one from your hometown too! March 27- Bike Recycling Programâs Spring Bike Sale! Mark the date! Weâll have road, mountain, cruiser, hybrid, and kidsâ bikes for sale. More details soon! *********************************************************** Keep in touch at our blog http://bikeathens.blogspot.com/ and facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/BikeAthens/126325948567 -- BikeAthens appreciates your continued support towards its mission of improving transportation options in Athens-Clarke County.
