35 Athens cyclists turn out for first Group Ride of the Year last Friday!

Thanks to all those who came out to our first Group Ride of the year last
Friday! We had about 35 folks riding, with an amazing mix of spandex and
jeans, speedy road bikes, a tandem bike, a bike with two child seats on
it, old clunkers, and everything in between! (Check ot pictures here!

We started and finished our ride at EarthFare where we enjoyed
complimentary snacks and socializing after the ride.

No worries if you missed the ride this time, we will have another one the
first Friday of every month from now til Halloween. We encourage everyone
to come out and try a ride. Not only are they fun, but they are an
important way you can contribute to our advocacy work. With rides like
this we are certainly sending the message loud and clear that there is
significant demand for safe bike facilities in our town, that bikes and
bikers of all types belong on our roadways, and that we can ride
courteously and safely with other vehicles.

Group Rides is also seeking volunteers to be part of the ride and the
BikeAthens Group Ride Council. Weâve got some fun things in the works to
spice up our usual rides and need your help! If youâre interested in being
involved, please contact board member Anna for details at

âBetter Bicycling Billâ passed the Senate Public Safety Committee!

House Bill 101, the âBetter Bicycling Billâ passed the Senate Public
Safety Committee on Tuesday, March 22nd- the same day as the hugely
successful Ride to the Capitol event! HB 101 is currently under review by
the Senate Rules Committee. The Senate has adjourned until April 11th,
after which they will have three more days to review this bill. So be sure
to let your state Senator know your thoughts on this bill before the 11th!

Counties Pitch Projects for T-SPLOST

Last week the twelve Northeast Georgia counties submitted their list of
proposed projects that they want to see funded with the T-SPLOST tax,
should the measure pass in 2012. Thereâs lots of road work, but some good
stuff too! Clarke County asked for $9 million to expand the North Oconee
River Greenway and $13.5 million to expand Athens Transit service.
Oglethorpe, Jackson, and Newton counties asked for money for other trail
projects, and Elbert, Greene, and Jackson counties joined together to
propose a $6.7 million regional transit system. Unfortunately no proposed
rail projects. Check out this ABH article for more details:

BRP back in full swing

BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 and Sundays from
2-4:30 at the Chase St. warehouses. Volunteers need not have any knowledge
of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty
repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring
your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you
have these items to participate.

BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local
social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in
the Athens community who are underserved by private and public
transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the
bikes.

Elsewhere on the Athens bike scene

Twilight Criterium needs volunteers! HandsOn Northeast Georgia, a program
of Community Connection is looking for volunteers to assist with the
Twilight Criterium, Athens' annual bike race event. They specifically need
strong, hard working volunteers to help with set-up, take
down, and other tasks. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and 'front row'
seats at the exciting event.
