Elsewhere on the Athens bike scene *********************************************************** Group Ride this Friday June 3, followed by Meet the Board Event! Our monthly Group Ride is this Friday June 3! In addition to being incredibly fun, serving a powerful message to the Athens community that bikes belong on the road, and building confidence for inexperienced riders, we have even MORE reasons for you to make it out to Earth Fare this Friday: 1) this will be our last ride starting and finishing at Earth Fare (but not the last of the season!), so come celebrate what great hosts they have been and enjoy some complimentary snacks! 2) Georgia just passed the 3-foot law, requiring vehicles to give bikes 3 feet of space when passing. What better way to celebrate than by getting out there on our bikes! 3) The whole board will be at Earth Fare at the end of the ride to meet and greet! This is a great opportunity to meet the fine folks behind this organization, ask questions, or make suggestions. So come enjoy the ride and snacks and beverages afterwards at this lovely location (1689 S. Lumpkin) at 6 PM. Remember to bring your helmet, a water bottle, and your friends! *********************************************************** BikeAthens hosting Traffic Safety 101 course to teach safe cycling in traffic BikeAthens and the League of American Bicyclists are collaborating to host a safe cycling course entitled Traffic Skills 101. It is a two part class designed to give cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. This course is a prerequisite for those seeking LCI Certification from the League of American Bicyclists. The Course includes - bicycle information and safety checks - classroom instruction and on-bike practice of safe cycling in traffic (bring your own bike for the second part of the class) - crash avoidance techniques and road hazard information - a student manual The course will take place Friday June 17th from 6:30-9 PM and Saturday June 18th from 9 AM-1 PM at UGAâs Center for Teaching and Learning. Space is limited, so register ASAP and by June 15th at the latest. Prices are $25 for the general public, or $15 for BikeAthens. Members. Email admin [at] bikeathens.com with questions or to register. *********************************************************** BikeAthens sponsors Bus Route Map Re-design Contest for local artists with ca$h prize! BikeAthens is facilitating the redesign of Athens Transit bus maps in order to make them more user-friendly by sponsoring a contest for local graphic designers, geographers, and artists. The winner will receive a $600 cash prize and a contract from Athens Transit to complete redesign of 15 bus route maps. Those interested in participating should submit a mock-up layout of a new bus route map, a 250 word description of how your proposed map will best serve the needs of the Athens community, and a resume by June 15 to chair [at] bikeathens.com. Maps may be created digitally or hand-drawn, but the final product must be created using Adobe software. The winner will be expected to complete all 15 contracted maps by July 22. For more details on required map components, go to www.bikeathens.com/news/bus-map-redesign *********************************************************** Speak out against proposed cuts to bus service! ACC (not Athens Transit) has proposed cutting night bus service in response to the funding crunch this year. Current approximate hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 6 AM - 11 PM. This is a real problem for second and third shift workers who rely on the bus for transportation. We highly encourage folks to come to one of the public hearings or submit their comments in writing. If no one speaks up, this critical service will be cut. Proposed cuts are detailed here: http://www.athenstransit.com/assets/docs/Proposed_Service_Changes.pdf Hearing Schedule (all take place at the MultiModal Center at 775 East Broad Street unless otherwise indicated): Thursday June 2, 2-3 PM Thursday June 2, 6-7 PM Comments can also be submitted online at: http://www.athenstransit.com/contact-ats.html, or mailed or delivered to the Multimodal Center. *********************************************************** National Trails day this Saturday June 4 Yay! National Trails Day is this Saturday, June 4. For those of you looking to hit the trails, hereâs a great map that shows the location of walking and biking trails across NE Georgia: http://www.negrc.org/resource-1.php?page_ID=1294343704 *********************************************************** Next Transportation Policy Committee Meeting June 8 The next Transportation Policy Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday June 8 at Little Kings Shuffle Club (223 W. Hancock St) at 5:30 PM. For those of you who donât know, this committee of BikeAthens is charged with working with transportation policy matters within Athens-Clarke County (ACC). Transportation policy includes issues related to transportation funding mechanisms, mode equity in funding priorities, and community engagement in the civic process through which transportation infrastructure is planned and built. The Transportation Policy Committee meets regularly to engage the community on these issues as they arise, and anyone is welcome to come and participate in meetings. No experience necessary! *********************************************************** Not too late to take our Bike to Work Survey! For those of you who didnât get to it last week, thereâs still time to take our Bike to Work Day Survey! I bet you can finish it in less than a minute! http://tinyurl.com/biketoworksurvey *********************************************************** A day of bike-filled fun on June 18! Saturday June 18 is going to be an awesome day if you like bikes! Starting in the AM will be the second day of our Traffic Skills 101 class- the part where you get on your bike and practice what you learned the day before! (Scroll up in this email to see more about this course). They will be riding from UGA to the Farmers Market, where BikeAthens reps will be set up with our demo bike and maps, helping folks learn about fixing their bikes and selecting routes. FINALLY, the fun will wrap up with our Summer bike sale from 2-4 PM at Earth Fare! All bikes are fixed up by our talented group of volunteers with all proceeds benefiting the Bike Recycling Program. *********************************************************** BRP volunteer nights BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Sundays from 2-4:30 PM at the Chase St. warehouses. Volunteers need not have any knowledge of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you have these items to participate. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes. *********************************************************** Elsewhere on the Athens bike scene Check out athensgabicycling.com to see a calendar of rides of all lengths and skill levels around town! *********************************************************** Keep in touch at our blog http://bikeathens.blogspot.com/ and facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/BikeAthens/126325948567 -- BikeAthens appreciates your continued support towards its mission of improving transportation options in Athens-Clarke County.
