Maps may be created digitally or hand-drawn, but the final product must be created using Adobe software. The winner will be expected to complete all 15 contracted maps by July 22. It is a two part class designed to give cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. This course is a prerequisite for those seeking LCI Certification from the League of American Bicyclists. The Course includes - bicycle information and safety checks - classroom instruction and on-bike practice of safe cycling in traffic (bring your own bike for the second part of the class) - crash avoidance techniques and road hazard information - a student manual The course will take place Friday June 17th from 6:30-9 PM and Saturday June 18th from 9 AM-1 PM at UGAâs Center for Teaching and Learning. For those of you who didnât get to it last week, thereâs still time to take our Bike to Work Day Survey! I bet you can finish it in less than a minute! http://tinyurl.com/biketoworksurvey *********************************************************** A day of bike-filled fun on June 18! Saturday June 18 is going to be an awesome day if you like bikes! Starting in the AM will be the second day of our Traffic Skills 101 class- the part where you get on your bike and practice what you learned the day before! (Scroll up in this email to see more about this course). They will be riding from UGA to the Farmers Market, where BikeAthens reps will be set up with our demo bike and maps, helping folks learn about fixing their bikes and selecting routes. FINALLY, the fun will wrap up with our Summer bike sale from 2-4 PM at Earth Fare! All bikes are fixed up by our talented group of volunteers with all proceeds benefiting the Bike Recycling Program. *********************************************************** BRP Summer Bike Sale coming up! Looking for a new (to you) bike? Or know a friend or co-worker who is? Come to our Summer Bike Sale and check out our commuters, cruisers, racers, and mountain bikes. Prices are generally $150 and up. All proceeds support the Bicycle Recycling Program. *********************************************************** BRP volunteer nights BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Sundays from 2-4:30 PM at the Chase St. warehouses. Volunteers need not have any knowledge of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you have these items to participate. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes. *********************************************************** Elsewhere on the Athens bike scene June 30- SORBA-Athens hosting bike parts swap SORBA-Athens, the mountain bike advocacy group that maintains trails at Heritage and Hawkes Creek and just got approval for new trails at East Athens Community Park, will be holding a bike parts swap on June 30 at the Five Points Jittery Joe's. Participants pay $15 for a table or space (all proceeds to SORBA) and the event will run from 6-8pm. Donations are also lovingly accepted (e.g. from proceeds of parts sales) but voluntary. This is a great opportunity to clear out old bike parts you arenât using, and make some money for yourself and SORBA! For more info about SORBA, check out their website: http://www.sorbaathens.org/ July 2- Special "3-Feet 2 Pass" Ride - "It Takes Three Feet to Ride" Where: Bishop Park, Athens, Ga (map) Description: AGB is proud to support BikeAthens and GeorgiaBikes.orâg by getting involved with the celebration of the new "3-Feet-2-Pass" law. As part of an awareness weekend for the new law, our ride on Saturday, July 2nd, will be the "It Takes Three Feet to Ride" ride. We leave from Bishop Park at 8 a.m. The full ride is a 45-mile Apple Valley/Brockton Loop, and we are also including an escorted, flat 8-mile out-and-back run on the Jefferson Road bypass. This shorter option is ideal for new and less experienced riders. Questions: Ken [at] AthensGaBicycling.com. Additional Information: As you probably know by now, HB 101 was signed by Governor Deal! The changes made by the bill, including a 3 foot passing distance requirement, goes into effect on July 1st. This new law is a great step forward for bicycle safety, but it will only be effective if it is widely known by Georgia's drivers. AthensGaBicycling, in coordination with other cities and groups throughout the state is having a ride to help raise awareness for the new law. In addition to the Athens area, rides are currently scheduled in Atlanta, Augusta, Norcross, LaGrange, & Savannah, with other sponsoring organizations including the Southern Bicycle League, the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, BikeAthens, Wheel Movement, Ravinia Rollers, West Georgia Flyers, and the Savannah Bicycle Campaign. Check out athensgabicycling.com to see a calendar of rides of all lengths and skill levels around town! *********************************************************** On the Horizon Volunteer opportunity June 18 We are looking for volunteers with basic bike maintenance skills to help out at our Commuter Assistance table at the Farmers Market on June 18. This year we are there every third Saturday of the month, with some fun new activities geared towards helping folks with their car-free commutes (think route planning, demonstrations of bike maintenance skills, etc).
