The Traffic Calming Solutions manual describes in easy to understand language how to navigate through the cityâs Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP). This program is the cityâs method for obtaining safer street infrastructure within your neighborhood. Prepared by Katie Goodrum for BikeAthens, it illustrates the vast array of traffic calming solution options, in order to improve pedestrian safety and create more pleasant neighborhoods for the citizens of Athens. Download a copy here! http://bikeathens.com/news/released-athens-traffic-calming-solutions-manual/ *********************************************************** Athens to 3-lane 2 roads The Athens-Clarke Commission voted Tuesday to three-lane two roads. Athens West Parkway and the four-lane portion of Pulaski Street between Broad and Dougherty Streets are the lucky winners of bike lanes when they are repaved later this year. Commissioners voted unanimously against three laning Hawthorne between Oglethorpe and Prince. A policy passed in 2005 calls for the commission to decide whether to 3 lane four-lane roads whenever they are due to be repaved. Research has shown that three-laning (turning streets from two lanes of traffic each way to one lane of traffic each way, a center turn lane, and bike lanes on either side) reduces injuries and deaths from collisions while not impeding traffic flow as long as roads carry fewer than 20,000 cars per day. The meeting is at 489 Prince Avenue (the old Firehall). *********************************************************** Annual Meeting and Member Party set for Saturday July 30! Weâve set the date for our Annual Meeting and Member Party for Saturday July 30! So mark your calendars, start getting excited, and donât be fooled by the word âmeetingâ in the title- this is also a party to celebrate our members and all the things YOU have helped us accomplish! *********************************************************** Volunteers needed for Commuter Assistance Day July 16 Come join us at our 4th Commuter Assistance Day at the Farmers Market not this Saturday but the next! Itâs a great opportunity to meet people and learn about car-free commuting in Athens. We are also looking for volunteers with basic bike maintenance skills to help out with our activities (think route planning, demonstrations of bike maintenance skills, etc). Email admin [at] bikeathens.com if you are interested in volunteering, we ask volunteers for just a 1-2 hour commitment. *********************************************************** Group Ride survey! Thanks again to all those who came out to our latest Group Ride fun at Little Kings. We have put a lot of effort into revitalizing our Group Rides this year and we are having tons of fun (and enjoying record setting attendance!), but want to know what YOU think too! So if you have been on a Group Ride, or havenât been on one because you donât find the idea appealing, tell us about it! Your feedback will help us tweak things like distance, starting and ending location, and the after ride social. And get ready for our August ride- weâll be finishing at Heirloom- the new local restaurant on Chase and Boulevard where BikeAthens members will enjoy a little discount! http://tinyurl.com/groupridesurvey *********************************************************** BikeAthens recruiting new board members BikeAthens is currently recruiting new board members to begin one year terms starting this August. It is a great way to get involved in your community, contribute to a great cause, and get valuable experience in the not for profit world. If you think you might be interested, or if you want to recommend someone you think might be interested, email chair [at] bikeathens.com to learn more! *********************************************************** BRP back to normal schedule BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Sundays from 2-4:30 PM at the Chase St. warehouses. Volunteers need not have any knowledge of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you have these items to participate. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes. *********************************************************** Elsewhere on the Athens bike scene Check out athensgabicycling.com to see a calendar of rides of all lengths and skill levels around town! *********************************************************** Keep in touch at our blog http://bikeathens.blogspot.com/ and facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/BikeAthens/126325948567 -- BikeAthens appreciates your continued support towards its mission of improving transportation options in Athens-Clarke County.
