We also need volunteers to help out at our table (think route mapping, sharing biking tips, the 3 feet 2 pass law). ********************************************************** Traffic Safety 101 class, Tuesday, Sept 20 A basic bike safety course, free to the public, will be taught on Tuesday, Sept 20, 5-7pm, at Creswell Hall, UGA. The course will be taught by four BikeAthens volunteers that are League Certified Instructors (LCIâs) through the League of American Bicyclists, so you canât get any better than this! Since Georgia law classifies bicycle commuters as âvehiclesâ, this 2 hour training session will make you a more confident and safe cyclist while traveling on the road. The course is packed with content, with drills built in towards the end. Volunteers need not have any knowledge of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you have these items to participate. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes. For more info: brp [at] bikeathens.com *********************************************************** Weekly Read: ACC, sidewalks, and safe routes to school ACC Commission approved a plan to use $310,000 in this yearâs SPLOST (1 cent sales tax) revenue for sidewalks on Barnett Shoals, Whitehead Road, Timothy Road and Winterville Road elementary schools. Almost $1.2 Million in SPLOST will be spent over the next 9 years for sidewalk infrastructure at other schools registered with the Safe Routes Resource Center. Safe Routes planning will be done at all other schools in need of more sidewalks for safer walking. http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/090711/new_882184378.shtml BikeAthens wrote many SPLOST project applications over a year ago, on behalf of Transportation Choices. One of those included sidewalk planning and infrastructure near most schools in the county. We also communicated with Commissioners about the need to plan for all schools regardless of infrastructure money. *********************************************************** Down the Road and Elsewhere in Athens: ACC Sidewalks Forum, Friday, September 16 Attend this public forum to learn and let the city know what you think of where they will spend FY12 money on sidewalks: Oglethorpe Avenue, Old Epps Bridge Road, and 2 sections of Barnett Shoals Road. Drop by 6:30-7:30pm, at Fire Station #4, Oglethorpe Avenue. http://www.athensclarkecounty.com/index.aspx?NID=4182 Global Climate Change Coalition Rally, Saturday, September 24 As part of the worldwide Moving Planet Day of Action, sponsored by 350.org and locally by the Georgia Climate Change Coalition (GC3), there will be a march and rally to promote reducing the carbon footprint and attention to climate change. March will begin on UGAâs South Campus in front of Miller Plant Sciences Building at 11 am and proceed to City Hall where there will be a program of speakers. A BikeAthens-led bike ride will begin and finish at City Hall 10:30am - 12pm. Come join in and show our local, state, and national leaders that you would like to see action!
