BikeAthens invites you to join us for a festive evening of exercise and fun as we walk and bike in the Athens-Clarke County Parade of Lights, Thursday, Dec.1, at 7PM !! There's also a more serious purpose to your joining us: to show Athens we support transportation choices. Our walking and riding in large numbers will be an effective statement of this. We have several suggested ways of participating in our holiday fun. Please show your support by coming out and bringing the entire family. Walking Walking is fundamental and should be a safe alternative to driving. Besides, itâs immensely healthful. If biking isnât for you or your family, come on out and walk the route to the claps and cheers of the Athens community. To help us get the message across about safe walking, especially in the darker hours of fall and winter, please consider these options: Dress as a good model for safe walking by wearing light-reflective clothing. Battery-operated holiday lights and festive gear will add to the fun! Or just bring a flashlight! Of course, dress warmly (weather appropriate). Riding We bicyclists are a hardy lot and ride in all weather conditions--day or night. We are sometimes not seen or taken seriously, however, by motorists or the public. We want a more bike-friendly community. By showing up in larger numbers than ever we will demonstrate to our Athens friends and neighbors that biking is supported by a growing segment of our population. At BikeAthens we stress safe cycling to all our members and the Athens community of bikers, so light up your bikes and your clothingâhelmets, included. Modeling a commitment to safe cycling is essential. Obey traffic laws and dress to be seen. We encourage bicyclists to wear helmets, especially if you can adorn it with your favorite, festive accessory. Children Welcome Parents and teachers, please consider getting your children or students into the festivities, too. They are most welcome and will enjoy marching/biking in the parade amidst the claps, shouts, and music of the parade festivities. Children must be accompanied by their parents, of course. Extra Tips In last yearâs parade, BikeAthens gathered on Dougherty St. between College Ave. and Pulaski St. (near Athens Blueprint & Copy Shop) along with all the other participants. Waiting for the parade to start can be a cold experience for the little ones. Please dress them appropriately and consider providing warm drinks before we step off. Once the parade begins, weâll all warm up. Itâs also dark around Dougherty St., so you may want to consider bringing flashlights and/or headlights. The parade ends in front of City Hall for the traditional Community Christmas Tree lighting ceremony. How to Join Us in the Parade All you have to do is come to Dougherty St. between College Ave. and Pulaski St. ready to walk/ride around 6:30PM, Dec. 1. Look for the BikeAthens group of bicyclists and walkers gathering together. Weâll give you a few brief instructions before we step off on our casual and fun experience. If you have questions, please e-mail them to Amy Johnson, Mike Ely or Jason Perry at brp [at] bikeathens.com. Thanks and Happy Holidays!
