Dinner and Bikes, Thursday April 26 Elly Blue, a famed bicycle blogger and advocate hailing from Portland, Oregon, will be here tomorrow, the day before the Twilight Criterium. This event will include a review of BikeAthens advocacy, Ellyâs discussion of her Portland advocacy, perusal of their awesome bike-related mobile bookstore, some short bicycling films, and a great vegan dinner by Chef Joshua Ploeg. $15/individual, $10/member, $8/student, $6/student member. Twilight Criterium and BikeAthens tabling this weekend!! In conjunction with SafeKidsAthens, an umbrella organization working out of Athens Regional for multiple child safety initiatives, BikeAthens will be tabling at the Twilight Criterium downtown during the day Saturday. Come get a free helmet fitting or commuter assistance. And then stick around Saturday evening for the races! At the Greenfest Award Ceremony last Friday, Jason Perry, BikeAthens Board member, announced two awards. The BikeAthens Volunteer of the Year Award went to Michael Brugger, who spent countless hours at BRP, taught multiple bicycle safety courses to people of all ages, expertly rides his unicycle in the Christmas parade each year, and helps out in every other way imaginable. The BikeAthens Advocate of the Year Award went to Anna Gore, BikeAthens and Georgia Bikes! Board Member, who dedicated her thesis practicum to working out criteria setting for the next Athens Bike Master Plan, revamped our monthly Group Ride program, and helped with multiple events. Thanks again to Michael and Anna !!! *********************************************************** 4. Traffic Safety for Cyclists course, May 3 Register for this course offered by BikeAthens at the Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA). Come learn about traffic laws in Georgia, bike lane positioning, safety checks, crash avoidance techniques, and how to ride in a group. Fast-paced and fun, from 5 - 6:30pm. Group Ride, May 4th Weâre starting at City Hall at 6PM on this First Friday for a casually paced, fun, and safe ride. Come learn safe riding practices, and practice riding with a group in the street on a 5-6 mile ride. Weâll end at Little Kings for a BikeAthens Social from 7-9PM. This ride will kick off bike month! Bring a helmet and water. *********************************************************** 6. ACHFâs Green Bike Tour, May 5 Join Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation as they partner with BikeAthens for their final event in the 2011-2012 Preservation Matters Historic Preservation: Inherently Green series. The tour, starting at 10am, will showcase âgreenâ building methods, educate on safe biking strategies, and discuss Athensâ walking, biking and public transportation options. Tour stops include properties in Pulaski Heights, Boulevard, and Cobbham. Athens Land Trust will discuss Earthcraft standards and infill in historic neighborhoods. Lori Bork of Bork Architectural Design Inc. will present information on the sustainability features (including LEED) of each property visited. USGBC/AIA continuing education credits offered: (estimated) 3 CE hours http://www.achfonline.org/calendar.html. BRP Volunteer Opportunities BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Sundays from 2-4:30 PM at the Chase St. warehouses. Come volunteer with us! New volunteers are best on Wednesdays. No skills necessary - we have plenty of volunteer jobs for all levels of experience. Just be willing to get your hands dirty. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation.
