1. May is National Bike Month!

If you haven't already, give your two-wheeled friend a spring cleaning for
National Bike Month! The National Bike Challenge runs from May 1 - May
31. Register and log miles ridden to show your love for cycling and to
compete for prizes!

2. Call today to save the Cardin-Cochran amendment

Congress has created an unusually bipartisan transportation bill called
the Cardin-Cochran amendment. This amendment will create more local
control in transportation design and spending. If this bill passes, the
millions of dollars each year dedicated federally to transportation
systems nationwide could be directed with more local control and less
state interference, if constituents can call in TODAY. Tomorrow will be
too late.

3. Transportation Policy Committee meeting, Thursday

Come help us this Thursday, 6pm, at Cineâ cafe as we discuss and develop
strategies for
submitting public comment on this yearâs TIP projects (Transportation
Improvement Plan) - a 6 year list using state and federal transportation
dollars,
developing formal opinions on the complexities of TSPLOST (the 1 cent
sales tax we vote on July 31), and
continuing to work on the draft complete streets policy

***********************************************************

4. Group Ride, Friday, June 1

Join us at City Hall at 6PM on this First Friday for a casually paced,
fun, and safe ride. Come practice riding with a group in the street on a
5-6 mile ride, and youâll learn some safe riding practices along the way
to increase your confidence while riding with traffic. Weâll end at
Little Kings for a BikeAthens Social from 7-9PM. Bring a helmet and
water.

5. BikeAthens Statement on the proposed A&D property redevelopment

BikeAthens representatives met with Selig Enterprises in February to
discuss suggested improvements to the proposed redevelopment at the A&D
property downtown. Below is a summary of our discussions and
recommendations, in the interests of our membership.

7. BRP Volunteer Opportunities

BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Sundays from
2-4:30 PM at the Chase St. warehouses. Come volunteer with us! New
volunteers are best on Wednesdays. No skills necessary - we have plenty
of volunteer jobs for all levels of experience. Just be willing to get
your hands dirty.

BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local
social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in
the Athens community who are underserved by private and public
transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the
bikes. For more info, go to www.bikeathens.com/programs/brp

8. Weekly Read: What Really Matters for Increasing Transit Ridership

Why are some bus systems underutilized? Turns out itâs because most
people donât work downtown. This article shows how the Broward County, FL
busses are surprisingly packed, only because their multi-trip destinations
donât revolve around a city center.
