As many of you have been following via Facebook, email, or in the local news, Grace Byrne is the Clarke Central High School 17-year old who was seriously injured when she was struck by a car while out running several weeks ago. Grace is a beautiful, talented, athletic high school girl. She is currently at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, recovering from traumatic brain injuries resulting from the accident. You can follow Grace's progress on the "Walnuts for Grace" page on Facebook -http://www.facebook.com/pages/Walnuts-for-Grace/134560726705505?ref=ts&fref=ts. This Saturday, we will meet in the Baxter Street lot at Clarke Central - http://goo.gl/maps/8GPyz - around 11:30 a.m. I have been in touch with Grace's mom, Mary DeVaux, and she will try to join us and say a few words about her daughter's heroic struggles to regain her abilities. We will take up a collection for the Grace DeVaux Byrne Medical Fund at First Athens Bank - any amount will be gratefully received by the family. At 12 noon, we will embark on a 43-mile bike ride from Clarke Central to Winterville, Arnoldsville, and back. I have also mapped out shorter routes of 22, 11, and 6 miles, to encourage all kinds of riders to come join us. The rides are free and open to all, and I will have cue sheets to give out to riders (you can also preview and print the attached sheet for the route you want to ride). Here are MapMyRide links to the four routes, as well: (43) - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/172617278; (22) - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/172619422; (11) - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/172624980; and (6) - http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/172625978. And even if you're not a cyclist, please come out to lend your support and make a contribution, if you wish - it would mean so much to the family and friends to see a large turnout this Saturday morning. It looks like it's going to be chilly (and maybe breezy) this weekend, so that will add to our challenge (or to the fun, if that's how you're wired!), but I suspect it will be nothing compared to the challenges that Grace is facing. So please come on out, ride for Grace, and help spread the word, too. Please also join our Facebook event page - http://www.facebook.com/events/123872534457896/?ref=ts&fref=ts. Many thanks to CCHS Principal Robbie Hooker and Athletic Director Jon Ward for their support of this event. ----- In a separate email, later this week, I will be sending out an update and reminder about the upcoming AthSav Kickoff Ride (2/23) and other great events in our unofficial "AthSav Training Series," but we'll focus on the Ride for Grace today. ----- Dr. Ken Sherman shermankathens [at] gmail.com 706-224-2526 "Life is like riding a bicycle.
