Greetings Bike Athens, Andrew Lane here, operator of the Lane Train. I am a big fan of the Bike Athens Fix Your Own Bike Shop/Warehouse concept. A good friend of mine just told me about these guys: Sopo Bike Co-Op in East Atlanta http://www.sopobikes.org 465-C Flat Shoals Ave. Atlanta, Georgia 30316 404-425-9989 info [at] sopobikes.org I imagine you all have heard of them and are probably interested in mimicking some of their techniques. I have been off the beaten path lately in the quest for a safer way to bike up Oconee Street from Down Town back to the East Side avoiding U.S 78 altogether at least for a mile or so. I have biked down Oconee St and ironically remained on it shortly after crossing the Bridge and Green Way parking and origin, veering right me up a decent hill which is where oconee St goes. Near the top of that hill it intersects with Poplar Street there are two large structures that are vacant and seemingly unwanted. One was obviously a School House built likely in the 1940's or 1950's and abandoned for quite a few year apparently. I imagine the City or State still own it. The other is a large one or two story structure made of white brick. I cannot tell what it used to be other than a commercial business I imagine. Neither one has much info posted about what to do if interested in it, but I imagine we could figure it out and see if it is feasible. Either one would likely provide ample space for the Bike Workshop and the Bike Recycling Program. I also need to share with you a few ways for a non-profit like Bike Athens to earn some money some of which is saving the planet at the same time. most of these are written in the context of my Church, Saint Gregory the Great on the East Side, participation: The most comprehensive and arguably the most interesting program is with the TerraCycle Company out of Trenton, New Jersey with the 26 Products listed below, a la cart. My Church, Saint Gregory the Great, is officially registered with TerraCycle and all these Brigades and it did not cost anything to join. All products are worth $0.02 each with the exception of the yogurt containers at $0.03 each and cell phones at $0.25 each. The postage is simply printed by us off their website. The only cost to us is the sleek, black shelving system we and some of our congregation are providing from Bed, Bath, and Beyond to collect and separate items and the boxes which we will ship them. I am sure we can collect copy paper size and below boxes by ourselves for free to ship. TerraCycle Products: 1-All Drink Pouches(such as Capri-Sun, Kool-Aid) 2-All Coffee Pouches(Such as Maxwell House, Equal Exchange Organic, Starbucks) If any one works in a Large Office where Large Flavia Machines Dispense Coffee and Tea it may be possible to set up a Collection Brigade to benefit a Non-Profit such as Saint Gregory the Great…Further Coordination is required ask your Brigade Commander or Staff! 3-All Cookie Wrappers(Such as Oreo and Keebler) 4-All Energy Bar Wrappers(Such as Granola Bars, Breakfast Bars, Cliff Bar, Oddwalla Bar) 5-All Candy Wrappers(Such as M&Ms, Hershey, and Snickers) 6-All Chip Bags(Such as Frito Lay, Pepperidge Farm, potato chip, crackers, pretzel, cheeto, nacho, and any that look and feel similar) 7-Lunchables Brand Lunch Kit Trays and Wrappers 8-All Nesting Yogurt Containers(Such as Stonyfield Farms, Chobani, Dannon) 9-All Nesting Butter Type Spread Containers(Such as Country Crock, Promise) 10-Spout Brand baby Food Containers and Wrappers 11-All Gum Wrappers(Such as Trident and Wrigley) 12-Malt-O-Meal Brand Cereal Bags 13-Bear Naked Brand Granola and Cereal Products 14-Kashi Brand Food Product Wrappers 15-All Squeezable Peanut Butter Tubes 16-All Corks, Real and Fake Plastic from wine and other liquor bottles 17-All Disposable Household Tape Dispensers(Such as Scotch) 18-All Zip Lock Type Bags 19-All Paper Towel and similar Paper Product Wrappers(Such as Scotts Paper Towels, Tissue Paper, Paper Napkins etc) 20-All Tooth Paste Tubes and used Toothbrushes(Such as Colgate, Crest, etc) 21-All Glue Containers and Glue Sticks(Such as Elmers) 22-All Used Up Human Writing Instruments such as: Pens, Sharpies, Markers, Highlighters, Magic Markers, and Mechanical Pencils 23-All Beauty Product Tubes(Such as Aveeno Skin Product Tubes) 24-Huggies Brand Diaper Wrappers 25-Neosporin Brand Small Tubes and Containers 26-All Cell Phones at $0.25 each This evening we just UPSed off about 14 boxes of trash to NJ postage paid by TC. You can check them out on youtube such as this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOSA9qHnDIY GoodSearch.com and GoodShop.com is free for a non-profit to join and raises money via using the GoodSearch Yahoo powered search engine at about 1 cent per search. The Good Shop is much like Upromise.com and for the hundreds of merchants involved they kick a percentage of a new purchases such as 3-4% in a donation to the registered charity. Go to www.goodsearch.com and enter Saint Gregory the Great in the "who do you search for?" slot. Select the St Gregory the Great Athens, GA. Click on the "Amount raised yellow button and you can check out the church's money raised month by month Search compared to Shop since joining in January 2009. I can tell you that Goodsearch has already paid us about $40 last November and this year we should get a check for about $60. I checked out a link Hortense(Church Office Administrator) sent me http://www.advantagecartridge.com/PriceLists/tabid/56/Default.aspx about how to recycle Cell Phones, Ipods and similar MP3 devices, Printer Cartridges, Copy Machine Toner Cartridges, Lap Top Computers. They pay $25-250 per phone if it is on their list and is a prized iPhone, Blackberry, or similar high tech model. They pay $1-10 for other low speed phones and $0.25 if it is an old extremely low speed phone. The Advantage Cartridge Company also sent specific Collection Boxes and postage shipping labels. There is nothing to pay in order to join or participate. Tomorrow I should be UPSing off a box of printer cartridges postage paid by them. Metal Conversion Technologies, LLC in Cartersville, Georgia 678-721-0022(poc: Gary)who sent us a 55 gallon drum with smaller buckets in order to collect Rechargeable Batteries which they will retrieve and pay us by the pound for our effort, about $0.10-0.25 cents depending on type(Nickel Metal Hydride, Nickel Cadmium, and Lithium Ion) We are collecting all batteries and those of us who are in the know can separate them. If we need we can take the alkalines over to a Scrap Metal Yard for $$$(0.08 cents a pound) or drop them off for free at the Athens-Clarke County Recycle Depot as this is the same Company who does business with ACC Recycling and picks up batteries from them. Remember Bicycling or just plain Walking: You Can't Beat The Miles Per Gallon or The Benefit To The Backside!
