Bike Recycling Program Info

BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8:30 and Sundays from
2-4:30 at the Chase St. warehouses. Volunteers need not have any knowledge
of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty
repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring
your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you
have these items to participate.

BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local
social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in
the Athens community who are underserved by private and public
transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the
bikes.

News from the Georgia Intermodal Leadership Summit

BikeAthens Board members Anna Gore, Tracie Sanchez, and Amy Johnson
attended the Georgia Intermodal leadership Summit in Macon this past
Friday. The Summit was coordinated by the Georgians for Passenger Rail, a
statewide group focused on implementing and further developing existing
passenger rail plans for our entire state. Topics of special note were:

* U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood emphasized in his speech to
a room full of state legislators âGeorgia better get its act togetherâ
(feds wonât give funding without local matched committments)
* HB277 (T-SPLOST) will likely generate $714 Million its first year
* Richard Mendoza, Atlantic Public Works Commissioner (like our David
Clark) said priorities should be on fixing existing infrastructure and
diversifying mode investment (yea to bike/ped!!)
* GA road systems are excellent, but weâve passed up huge federal funding
for passenger rail and other modalities
* If we get passenger rail, the Macon-Atlanta line will likely be first
recipient
* strategies for making it happen: POLITICAL WILL, LEADERSHIP, and
COLLABORATION

Let us know your thoughts on the Discussion listserv
(discussion-l [at] bikeathens.com), and weâll pass that on to these state
leaders. We will be meeting with the Board of Georgians for Passenger Rail
again soon.
