Weekly Announcement 11/03/10 1. Last Bike to Market Day this Saturday! 2. BikeAthens announces new UGA community resource 3. Bike Recycling Program Info 4. News from other alternative transportation advocates 5. On the Horizon ******************************************************** Last Bike to Market Day this Saturday! This Saturday marks our last Bike to Market Day of the Season. We encourage everyone to brave the nippy weather and ride, walk, or take the bus to the market to support our local farmers, earn your free cookie, and see what BikeAthens has been up to! ******************************************************** BikeAthens announces new UGA community resource At our last Board Meeting, we decided it would be a good idea to designate a board member as our official UGA liason. Board member Jason Perry, a research engineer with the UGA Engineering Outreach Service, stepped into the role. The UGA-BikeAthens Liaison (uga [at] bikeathens.com) is a single point of contact through which the campus community can reach the BikeAthens leadership and volunteers. The liaison will also go to the appropriate UGA personnel with questions or concerns raised by members of the BikeAthens board or the BikeAthens constituency. The person serving in this position is a BikeAthens board member who is also a member of the UGA community, either as faculty, staff, or student. The liaison will either respond directly to contacts from UGA or will direct the contact to the appropriate board member or committee. The liaison will provide regular reports to the board to summarize activities involving UGA and BikeAthens. *********************************************************** Bike Recycling Program Info BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8:30 and Sundays from 2-4:30 at the Chase St. warehouses. Volunteers need not have any knowledge of bicycle maintenance; just be willing to get their hands dirty repairing, tuning up, cleaning, and outfitting bikes. Feel free to bring your own repair stands and tools although it is not necessary that you have these items to participate. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes. ************************************************************* News from other alternative transportation advocates http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2013287738_bikelobby29m.html One of our board members caught this article in The Seattle Times- an interesting read for all of us interested in cycling advocacy. Seattleâs Cascade Bicycle Club has experienced tremendous growth and success (and a few bumps) over the past few years. We encourage folks to read the article and share your thoughts on the BikeAthens discussion listserv (discussion-l [at] bikeathens.com) ************************************************************* On the Horizon - November 18: Aaron Leeâs Ukulele by Bicycle Tour at the Globe Aaron is a songwriter who has put on concerts all along the east coast to promote sustainable living and local communities. He started in Maine and rides his bike from concert to concert and is finally arriving in Georgia this November 18. The concert will take place on the second floor of the Globe at 8 PM and there is a suggested donation of $3-5.Check out Aaronâs blog for more information and a taste of his music http://ukulelebybicycle.blogspot.com. - Annual Holiday Bikes for Kids The Bike Recycling Program will be starting the annual Holiday Bikes for Kids program in a few weeks. We are looking for good kids bikes to refurbish, and for volunteers to help us repair them. Our goal this year is 60 kids bikes!
