Help make Athens an official Bike Friendly Community

We need your help! BikeAthens will be assisting the Athens-Clarke County
government in applying for the coveted Bicycle Friendly Community
designation through the League of American Bicyclists in early 2011.
BikeAthens is supportive of this application because of the many positive
benefits it could bring: promotion of our community on a national level,
benchmarking and technical assistance for the local government, and
feedback on what we can do to enhance the cycling environment. For more
information on the program, visit
http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bicyclefriendlyamerica/communities/index.php.
A community meeting is scheduled for January 13 from 6-7:30 at 135 Hoyt
Street, downtown (the Athens Community Council on Aging building) to
discuss volunteer opportunities - in the meantime, email Nina at
chair [at] bikeathens.com if you'd like to be involved!

MLK Day of Service January 17

The HandsOn Northeast Georgia MLK Volunteer Day is Monday January 17! This
is a great opportunity to make your day off a Day of Service. You can
volunteer at BIkeAthens or at several other organizations that also have
great projects for the day. For volunteers, your day will start out with
complimentary entertainment, coffee, and breakfast snacks at the Morton
Theatre followed by a symbolic march in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr., after which you will head to your project of choice from 10-1.
BikeAthens will be cleaning the shop and salvaging bikes to make the
workspace cleaner, less cluttered, and more effective. For more
information and to sign up for a project, go to the 2011 MLK Day page:

BRP takes a short break

The Bicycle Recycling Program is taking a short break after working
overtime on the Holiday Bikes for Kids. The BRP shop will probably be
closed until March. Hopefully when we reopen weâll be getting ready to
move into our new space at the Chase Street Warehouses!

Proposed Washington State law aims to clearly state out bike, ped, and
driver responsibilities

This article entitled âCars versus bikes: Bill aims to make roads saferâ
gives a good explanation of a bill that would change several sections of
Washington state law relating to bicyclists and autos on the roads. Rep
Jamie Pederson, D-Seattle, said that a similar bill he proposed two years
ago stalled in the Senate because folks were concerned that in its focus
on driver responsibilities, it failed to include responsibilities of
cyclists. As tensions are often high between cyclists and drivers (just a
glance at the comments at the bottom of the article makes this perfectly
clear), it seems like this bill is a step in the right direction as far as
acknowledging the rights and responsibilities of everyone on the road,
although how strictly it would be enforced is another matter
entirely...Either way, itâs a good example of legislation that might be of
interest to folks involved in BikeAthens, so check out the article here:
