Down the Road and Elsewhere in Athens *********************************************************** Thank You MLK Day Volunteers! BikeAthens sincerely thanks our Bike Recycling Program volunteers that came out on MLK Day, Monday, Jan 16. All 20 volunteers that came to the shop helped scrap our especially rusty bikes into replacement parts for the rest of our bicycle inventory. They also helped build racks for helping store more in less space, in addition to generally spiffing up the shop. We are very proud of their efforts. Here are some Athens Banner Herald photos of their work: http://onlineathens.com/local-news/2012-01-17/hundreds-pitch-mlk-day-service And facebook photos: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.360215437328864.102654.197850973565312&type=1 *********************************************************** Transportation Policy Committee meeting TODAY The Transportation Policy Committee is working with a broad Coalition to write the Athens Complete Streets Policy. We're open for experienced volunteers only for the next couple of weeks, while we catch up after the holidays. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes. Two sisters and their mother and close friend will ride across America to benefit bicycle safety advocacy efforts of the League of American Bicyclists and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. Dubbed "Ride America for Safe Routes" (RASR), their ride will travese 13 southern states and 20 major cities, logging over 5,000 miles between Florida and California. RASRâs mission is to raise $50,000 for the Leagueâs Bike Friendly America program and for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs in local communities.
