Thank You MLK Day Volunteers!

BikeAthens sincerely thanks our Bike Recycling Program volunteers that
came out on MLK Day, Monday, Jan 16. All 20 volunteers that came to the
shop helped scrap our especially rusty bikes into replacement parts for
the rest of our bicycle inventory. They also helped build racks for
helping store more in less space, in addition to generally spiffing up the
shop. We are very proud of their efforts. Here are some Athens Banner
Herald photos of their work:

volunteers only for the next couple of weeks, while we catch up after the
holidays.

BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local
social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in
the Athens community who are underserved by private and public
transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the
bikes. For more info: brp [at] bikeathens.com

Benefit Ride Cross Country Stops in Athens, Feb 23
Four ambitious women are undertaking a cross country endurance ride that
kicks off in Key West February 5 and culminates in San Francisco in late
April. Two sisters and their mother and close friend will ride across
America to benefit bicycle safety advocacy efforts of the League of
American Bicyclists and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership.
Dubbed "Ride America for Safe Routes" (RASR), their ride will travese 13
southern states and 20 major cities, logging over 5,000 miles between
Florida and California. RASRâs mission is to raise $50,000 for the
Leagueâs Bike Friendly America program and for Safe Routes to School
(SRTS) programs in local communities. In addition, theyâll be advocating
for bike safety and promoting the public health benefits of bicycling
through events with local bicycle groups and SRTS programs in communities
along their route. See the RASR website at
http://rideforsaferoutes.blogspot.com or contact
rideforsaferoutes [at] gmail.com for more information and to support a future
of bike-friendly communities.
