1. Railroad Days, A Celebration of Athens Transportation, March 10

Join the Athens Community Council on Aging as they host their annual 5k
fundraising event on this beautiful spring Saturday in March, 11-3:30pm.
There will be plenty of fun for the entire family. Titled Athens
Transportation, come learn about the history of the Athens Railroad, bike
paths around town, bike safety, and getting around on âThe Busâ.

2. Send a letter in support of the new transportation bill

Late last week, we had a big victory as the US Senate agreed to include
three amendments to the transportation bill, including one amendment to
give local governments more control to invest in small projects in their
communities that make bicycling and walking safer, revitalize our main
streets, or make better connections to transit. Local control is key for
Athens, Georgia, as our city planners and engineers often have great ideas
that get bogged down or wonât pass through GDOT. Send a letter in support
here:

3. Come attend or volunteer at the Ticket to Ride

The annual Athens-Maxeys training ride for Savannah has joined forces with
Firefly Trail, Inc. to become the March 24th Firefly Trail Ticket to Ride.
This is the inaugural bike ride/tour to build support and awareness of
the Firefly Trail. Come explore the route of the proposed rail-to-trail
project along roads through the scenic countryside and usually within a
few yards of the historic Georgia Railroad corridor where the trail will
be installed. FREE, open to all, and fully supported with SAG stations and
refreshments at the depot and whistle stops. Many distances - from 15 to
80 miles - are available. If you'd like to volunteer anytime between
9:30am-2:30pm, email volunteermanager [at] bikeathens.com

4. BRP Volunteer Opportunities

BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Sundays from
2-4:30 PM at the Chase St. warehouses. Come volunteer with us! New
volunteers are best on Wednesdays. No skills necessary - we have plenty
of volunteer jobs for all levels of experience. Just be willing to get
your hands dirty.

BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local
social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in
the Athens community who are underserved by private and public
transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the
bikes. For more info, go to www.bikeathens.com/programs/brp

5. Weekly Read: MEGABUS comes to Athens!

Check out this article about the new Athens - Atlanta bus service. Itâs
finally affordable, leaves 3x daily from each cityâs respective downtown
center, and makes tons of sense.
