May is National Bike Month! If you haven't already, give your two-wheeled friend a spring cleaning and join us for a host of events! The May 4th BikeAthens Group Ride will celebrate the start of the month. Bike to Work Week is May 14-18, ending with Bike to Work Day on Friday May 18th! Traffic Safety for Cyclists course, Thursday, May 3 Register for this course offered for FREE by BikeAthens at the HTEdwards Building. Come learn about traffic laws in Georgia, bike lane positioning, safety checks, crash avoidance techniques, and how to ride in a group. Fast-paced and fun, from 5 - 6:30pm. Group Ride, Friday, May 4 Weâre starting at City Hall at 6PM on this First Friday for a casually paced, fun, and safe ride. Come learn safe riding practices, and practice riding with a group in the street on a 5-6 mile ride. Weâll end at Little Kings for a BikeAthens Social from 7-9PM. This ride will kick off bike month! ACHFâs Green Bike Tour, Saturday, May 5 Join Athens Clarke Heritage Foundation as they partner with BikeAthens for their final event in the 2011-2012 Preservation Matters Historic Preservation: Inherently Green series. The tour, starting at 10am, will showcase âgreenâ building methods, educate on safe biking strategies, and discuss Athensâ walking, biking and public transportation options. Tour stops include properties in Pulaski Heights, Boulevard, and Cobbham. Athens Land Trust will discuss Earthcraft standards and infill in historic neighborhoods. Lori Bork of Bork Architectural Design Inc. will present information on the sustainability features (including LEED) of each property visited. BRP Volunteer Opportunities BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Sundays from 2-4:30 PM at the Chase St. warehouses. Come volunteer with us! New volunteers are best on Wednesdays. No skills necessary - we have plenty of volunteer jobs for all levels of experience. Just be willing to get your hands dirty. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. Down the Road and Elsewhere in Athens: National Bike Challenge, starts May 1 Register and log miles ridden to show your love for cycling and to compete for prizes! Starts starts May 1st! http://georgiabikes.org/index.php/blog/236-national-bike-challenge National Bike to School Day, May 9 http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/about-us/newsroom/bike-school-day Tour de Farm, 2012, May 26 - 28 Brought to you by PLACE, this bicycle tour over Memorial Day weekend seeks to reconnect the community to their local food sources in and around Athens, Georgia. The tour will visit a total of 8 farms, covering a distance of 100 miles over 3 days.
