Social Event: Pizza and Cross-Country Bicyclists Meet us at Little Kings this Thursday, February 23 for some Pizza and a chance to meet 4 Cross-Country Cyclists traveling through Athens. From 6-9pm, you can meet these four women riding cross country from Key West, FL to San Francisco, CA. Two sisters, a mom, and one close friend are making their way across America on 2 wheels to benefit bicycle safety advocacy efforts. Dubbed "Ride America for Safe Routes" (RASR), their ride traverses 13 southern states and 20 major cities, logging over 5,000 miles. RASRâs mission is to raise $50,000 for the Leagueâs Bike Friendly America program and for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs in local communities. If youâd like to ride with them into our out of town Thursday afternoon or Friday late morning, contact volunteermanager [at] bikeathens.com http://www.rideforsaferoutes.com *********************************************************** 2. ACCA and BikeAthens enter Partnership BikeAthens has entered a partnership with the Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA)! Together, we will work towards making the transportation network within Athens safer and more accessible. The ACCA is already planning to host many BikeAthens bike safety classes. Also, ACCA contributed to the Athens Complete Streets Policy, incorporating great urban design guides meant for all populations of pedestrians and transit users! And this Spring a Group Ride will have their final destination be a fun movie night at the ACCA. Saturday, March 10, 11-3:30pm, weâll celebrate Railroad Days at their facility. Also known as A Celebration for Athens Transportation Day, weâll be talking up transportation safety and commuter routes. www.facebook.com/events/177581709009536/?ref=nf *********************************************************** 3. BRP Volunteer Opportunities BRP workdays are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 6-8 PM and Sundays from 2-4:30 PM at the Chase St. warehouses. Come volunteer with us! New volunteers are best on Wednesdays. No skills necessary - we have plenty of volunteer jobs for all levels of experience. Just be willing to get your hands dirty. BikeAthens' Bicycle Recycling program, a cooperative venture with local social support agencies, distributes reconditioned bikes to individuals in the Athens community who are underserved by private and public transportation. We rely exclusively on volunteers to recondition the bikes. For more info, go to www.bikeathens.com/programs/brp *********************************************************** 4. ACC Bicycle Route Plan Meeting If youâd like to learn about ACCâs current efforts at improving bicycle connectivity and infrastructure, come to the meeting Wednesday, March 7th, 2012, 7 - 9pm. Youâll here from David Clark, Director of Transportation and Public Works and Anna Gore, BikeAthens board member and UGA MEPD candidate. The presentations will include a summary of the ACC bicycle route survey, planning conclusions drawn from public input and research, and a draft of the Southeast Athens Bicycle Route Plan. Meet at the Planning Auditorium at 120 West Dougherty Street. *********************************************************** 5.
